GRADUATE PROGRAM on Economic and Political Governance in SE Europe

A brief presentation
The Department of Balkan Studies in Florina was established in September 6th 1999, as a Department of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Since January 2003, when the University of Western Macedonia was established, the Department of Balkan Studies came under the authority of the above foundation. The Department's educational principles and policy were formed according to the needs created by the new conditions, after the collapse of Soviet Union and the social and economic realignments occurred all over Eastern Europe. The financial immigration and the home-coming of expatriated from the Euxine Sea areas leaded to the daily contact and transaction of Greek society with peoples and cultures barely known to modern Greeks. These communicational needs became most pressing after the violent conflicts of latter years in Balkan and the multilevel intervention of Greece to its neighbouring countries. Within this concept, in the educational program are included the studies of Economics, Law, Political Sciences, Social Anthropology, Culture, History from antiquity until present days, International Relations, Mass Media and Political Communication, Balkan and Russian Languages and also Informatics. The Department focuses on the cultivation and promotion of scientific research and knowledge. It encourages the intensification of inter-religious and inter-cultural relations of Greece with the Peoples of Balkan Peninsula, of Eastern Europe and Euxine Sea so that to favor the correct neighbourhood and communication. It also aims at providing the public authorities with factual information and scientific elements which should help to its more effective cooperation with the other Balkan countries, the countries of Eastern Europe and the Euxine Sea.
